The Shoe Museum’s Educational Service receives students and teachers, booked in advance, and the accompanying is conducted by specialized monitors that guide the visit and workshops according to the age and school levels of the visitors. So that the visit is as successful as expected, a strict collaboration between the technicians from the Educational Service and the teachers is necessary, so we suggest a preparation visit to the Shoe Museum first.

 

According to public and educational interests, we provide the following types of activities:
1. Visit - consists only of the guided tour to the permanent and/or temporary exhibition. This visit may be general or theme based (estimated time: 50 minutes)
2. Visit + workshop - consists of the tour to the permanent and/or temporary exhibition, followed by a previously selected workshop (estimated time: 90 minutes)
3. Workshop – this module consists of a workshop selected by the visitor in the space destined for the Educational Service (estimated time: 40 minutes)

 

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMES

Aiming to attend to the great diversity of visitor’s needs and expectations, we developed different educational programmes:

Programmes for school groups, specifically aimed at Preschool level, 1st, 2nd, 3rd basic education cycles, Secondary and University levels; Educators, teachers and trainers.

Programmes for the general public, aimed at different ages and types of group, such as children from 3 to 5, children and youngsters with special educational needs (NEE), groups of teenagers and young adults, families and adults.

 

VISITS TO THE MUSEUM

TECHNICAL VISITS | TEACHERS

Teachers may start with a preparation visit to the Museum. This visit intends to establish and define the teacher’s cultural and educational interests and adapt the contents of the visit to those interests. The Museum provides an educational binder to prepare the visit with your students and to lately explore contents and educational actions. Preparation visits are free for the teacher and should be booked in advance.

 

THEMATIC VISITS

 

THE WORLDS MOST FAMOUS

The Shoe Museum opens its exhibition with the world’s most famous shoe, the one from Cinderella. Starting from the traditional story and with the help of an enchanted character, the little ones will discover the wonderful process of making a shoe and knowing many shoes throughout mankind’s history.

Target public: pre-primary students (under 6 years old)

 

THE SHOEMAKERS WORKSHOP

The manufacturing process of footwear has undergone a major transformation throughout the 20th century. This visit intends to put into dialogue the traditional craft of the shoemaker and the industrial production and its evolution.

Target public: people over 16 years

HISTORIES OF A RED CARPET

From the "Time Tunnel" to the "Notable Shoes" collection you can find unique and unrepeatable histories. From the red heel created by Louis XIV to the stiletto of Manuela Azevedo come and find out more other shoes with many histories to tell.

Target public: secondary, vocacional and university students

 

WHAT IS NATIONAL ...

This visit focuses mainly on the history of Portuguese footwear and design. Get to know about the traditional techniques of production, its regions, the regional footwear, the reality of the national production and the most established Portuguese designers. Deepen your knowledge on the evolution of a sector that stands out in the national panorama.

I USUALLY WENT TO SCHOOL BAREFOOT

On day, not long ago, a son of a clog maker visited the Shoe Museum. There he told us that on his first day of school he noticed he was the only child wearing shoes. Embarrassed, he decided to took his clogs off, kept them on his satchel and went to the class barefoot just like all his other colleagues. 
The tone is given for a visit to the "Shoemakers Workshop" and "Industrial Production" area. This "dialogue visit" is based on the sharing of histories and experiences related to the footwear theme.

WORKSHOPS

 

THOSE LOOPS!

While seated in a circle, using a song, some gestures and many other tricks, the little ones will learn how to tighten their shoelaces.

 

WINGED FEET!

What if we could fly with winged shoes? What if we could have wings on our feet? What shoes could would make us fly?

 

SANJO ARE OUT THERE...

Sanjo is a brand of sneakers from S. João da Madeira that became famous all over the country. For this reason, in the Shoe Museum there is a showcase full of beautiful Sanjo sneakers. After seeing the different models exhibited, visitors will be challegend to create their own sanjo shoe.

 

THE FOLDS OF A SANDAL

After visiting the Time Tunnel, visitors will get to know the first type of footwear worn by Man. Sandal was one of the first models and it varied from a simple strip over the foot to more complex models. Using the folding and collage technique, visitors will create a full-scale sandal.

 

CAN YOU GIVE ME THE HONOR OF THIS DANCE?

The history of the evolution of footwear is closely linked to the history of dance. In this workshop, the participants will have the opportunity to experience various dance steps characteristic of different historical periods, such as the Waltz or Can-can of the 19ths, the Charleston of the 1920s, the Rockn roll of the 1950s or the Disco of the 1980s.

 

MY FIRST SHOE

Using footwear modeling techniques used in industry and taking into account the technical specificities of the raw materials and different ways of production, visitors will be challenged to create their first shoe.

 

IS THIS A SHOE?

The "Art Shoes" area exhibits artwork whose main theme is footwear. This activity proposes the visitor to work on the fragile line that distinguishes the Shoe as an everyday object and as an artistic object. Using a shoe form visitors will create their own "art shoe" deciding theirselves where to draw that line.
